your new overlord, plus conventions and more

First off, Aloysius is conquering the legions of steampunks online and corraling them at the Steampunk Ning Empire. Events, photos, a forum, and much more are to be found! (He's a benevolent tyrant, so it's okay. I recommend you join!)
 
More events taking place this year include "Sphinx & Drinks" at the Egyptian Rosicrucian Museum in San Jose this July and WindyCon (featuring a steampunk theme this year) in Chicago this November. Start planning now!
 
The Punchdrunk theatre company recently had a wild gear-laden installation under London's Waterloo Station -- photos are online and there are rumors it may return in the fall.
 
You know steampunk is getting mainstream when there are actual "steampunk jewelry" suppliers online, by the way. Not that I'm complaining, as I'm one of the types who want this look and art in the mainstream so that it's easier and cheaper to find!
 
These steampunk rides, on the other hand, will never be mainstream, but they are amazing and worthy of wonder for that very reason.
 
And finally, for those of us who also love the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s: Dieselpunks!

Dances of Vice, books of steampunk, and more

Okay, it's official: the Steampunk Librarian (aka me) is going to be at Dances of Vice in New York City this weekend, even though this month's dress theme is about as far from my comfort zone as one can get! If you see me there, say hi.
 
Did you know there's a calendar for steampunk-related events? It's true, and you can email the site to add events as well.
 
The Affinity Bridge was summarized as "a steampunk Sherlock Holmes story with zombies."  That's pretty hard to resist.  Also, Scott Westerfeld teases his readers with this preview of a steampunk-themed trilogy that's due to start this fall.
 
If you visit the Science Museum in London sometime soon, you may get a strange and wonderful booklet from a cabbie. If you're nowhere near the museum, it's also available in PDF.
 
You may remember Doktor A and his fantastic Spooky Pop creations; now behold his Mechtorians!
 
And finally...let's look to the future and envision a world of hybrid locomotives. Why not?

a quick swarm of links

The steampunk link of the week is, of course, the beautiful Mac Mini that was customized as a wedding gift. It's beautiful, and the "lid" design is one of my favorite parts! Apple should look into that as a retro logo.

I had read bits and pieces of a pneumatic travel system in the 19th century, but the wonderful Damn Interesting has consolidated the parts into a fantastic article on New York City's pneumatic transit system of the 1870s. I envy the people who had the chance to try it out!

Mounted trophies from hunting expeditions are very Victorian. So it would make sense that neo-Victorians would have robotic trophies, wouldn't it? Much more technologically advanced, and much more humane!
