This week's assortment of steampunk-inspired links ended up on the more pragmatic, DIY side of life for some reason. To wit:

Tactical corsets, perfect for the modern era!
Make your own spats!
Learn about how steam is making a comeback in the modern technological world!
Consider the sea-based cities of the future, as imagined by various designers. I like the fourth one the best, personally.
More computer modding, this time with an Egyptian bent. (I suggest including mummified hard drives, motherboards, etc., that have failed in the past.)

And finally, for the impractical and imaginative: huge leviathan battleships in the skies! Aieee!

Also, a note: the Steampunk Librarian will now also be mirrored on the Steampunk Empire for the forseeable future. Oooh, ahhh.

mischief, memory, and telecalulographs

Two entries today! The first is the link format you all know and love; the next will be photo-heavy. To the links we go...

Jake Hildebrandt has built a Telecalculograph that's beyond amazing...and you can win it! (Only if you're in North America, sadly -- but once you see it, you'll understand the shipping difficulties.)

However, over in the UK, White Mischief has just finished up a show and there will probably be many more to come. The site is huge and detailed and fun.

While not confined to the Victorian era, the Memory Palace's podcasts showcase fascinating historical tidbits, and are highly recommended for anyone interested in weird history!

Datamancer has done it again. The Archbishop computer is a thing of beauty.

Another new bit of steampunk-inspired fun is the latest Venture Brothers episode, which brings in Tesla, Twain, Wilde, Crowley, Fantômas, and Sandow. And the Avon Lady, too.

Meanwhile, near Vail, Colorado, a mysterious genius continues construction on his copper-roofed observatory. (I tried to find some more information on this, but struck out.)

While steampunk celebrates the Victorian era, there are a lot of ethical issues facing people who like the aesthetics but deplore the realities of the time. A really interesting discussion on colonialism, imperalism, and how POC (people of color) feel about the era is taking place. Highly recommended reading.

Modern life has its own share of ethical conflicts, of course. How You Can Save the World is a new website, sponsored by the Sci-Fi channel, that tackles issues such as environmentalism, futurism, and nanotechnology.

(By the way, a flying car is out there. It's not terribly pretty just yet, but it's out there!)

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century is a creation of the 1930s, so steampunk purists can ignore this last bit. I have a passion for the '30s and '40s, however (I'm considering changing my slogan to "long skirts and flying cars," regardless of what time frame this encompasses), and so I think these Buck Rogers prototypes are absolutely glorious. The entire website is great, too!

Thanks to our (much appreciated!) UK correspondent Julie, we have additional Telectroscope information! There are tiny "minumentals" available for purchase, as well as souvenir boxes. Also, there's a weblog documenting the experience!

If you've got the sort of money to spend on minumentals, you might very well be interested in Datamancer's auction for his amazing monitor.

If you're trying to answer the question "so what's this steampunk stuff all about, anyway?" from various people, you can direct them to this 25-page illustrated article on the idea! It may not answer their questions, but at least it'll keep them busy for a while.

For those of us who love Mateusz Skutnik's Flash games, it's an exciting time, for Daymare Town 2 is out and available to play! This one even has hot air balloons!

And finally, for the wealthy interior designers among us (?), the room divider and sticker options at dVider have great potential. There are jellyfish designs for your Nautilus theme! And ironwork designs for your Victorian study! And trains for, um, whatever you like!

The steampunk link of the week is, of course, the beautiful Mac Mini that was customized as a wedding gift. It's beautiful, and the "lid" design is one of my favorite parts! Apple should look into that as a retro logo.

I had read bits and pieces of a pneumatic travel system in the 19th century, but the wonderful Damn Interesting has consolidated the parts into a fantastic article on New York City's pneumatic transit system of the 1870s. I envy the people who had the chance to try it out!

Mounted trophies from hunting expeditions are very Victorian. So it would make sense that neo-Victorians would have robotic trophies, wouldn't it? Much more technologically advanced, and much more humane!
